Review: The Coin Jam feeds arcade nostalgia fiends
The not-so-skinny: The Coin Jam is Salem ‘s lone “ barcade, ” a 21+ arcade with classic and newer games, cold beers and adequate food. Owner C.J. Nelson intelligibly enjoyed creating the nerdy eden in the fantasies of every arcade frequent. Vintage Sci-Fi posters hang on the walls next to framed memes. Old ’90s hits play on the radio while you wait for your beer. Oh, and all the beer is cheap and divers : $ 3 domestic pints and $ 4.50 craft brews to sip as you run from Pacman ghosts or challenge Red Skull. In fact, they ‘ve recently bumped up the beer choice to 50 different bottles available for purchase. “ We ‘re labeled a beer barroom, and we ‘re owning that fact. We ‘re the premier position in Salem for person to walk in and get any kind of beer, ” said coach Sean Newton. “ This is a playground for adults where you do n’t have to deal with screaming kids. ” The food menu is amazingly diverse, equally well, so you can chow down on greasy burgers or quinoa lettuce cups between rounds of air field hockey.

Roasted cauliflower is simple and tasty : tender but not bathetic, seasoned with plain old salt and pepper. A light drizzle of balsamic reduction does n’t overpower the vegetable, as sticky reduced vinegar often does. But not every nosh is leading. Coin Jam sells batch of unlike variations on fries, smothered in green chilies and cheese or dusted in sweet pepper. unfortunately, no matter how you dress it up, a bad electrocute is however a badly fry : dry and bland. The handmade Grizzlebee’s tots, stuffed with ranch temper and Parmesan become a vehicle for chipotle mayonnaise. If you ‘re looking for ease food, a bowling ball of authoritative macaroni and cheese with chunks of bacon will do the trick. What to sip: The Coin Jam is a beer and wine bar, but they feature enough of local anesthetic favorites. Gilgamesh appears on tap about always, along with Bend ‘s Deschutes Brewery. Willamette Valley Vineyards pinot noir, riesling and pinot gris are available by the glass. What you’ll spend: Food will likely weigh down your bill, as opposed to beer. Snacks range from $ 4 to $ 11, and entrees never hit $ 15. With a few beers, a few noshes and a few rounds of Galaga, you ‘ll spend less than $ 50 ( more likely $ 25 ). Beers range from $ 3 to $ 6 for a pint.
